Help support the Mink Brook Stewardship Fund. This fall, we replaced the carved rails of the Brook Road gate at our Mink Brook Nature Preserve to reflect our new name. The rustic, gracefully weathered originals are now a part of history. We’re accepting bids on each until January 1, 2012. Exploring history at Mink Brook Preserve
On Saturday, Nov. 5, we’ll explore the last 250 years of history at the Mink Brook Nature Preserve with historian Jay Barrett. Join us from 2-4pm, starting at the Brook Road gate. Families welcome (best to leave 4-footed members at home); no registration required. We’ll start with a gentle walk along the Quinn and Wheelock Trails. Those ready for an off-trail scramble can continue with us as we explore the higher terrain on the preserve’s south side.
Saturday Trip to Balch Hill
Announcing the time and location of this weekend’s trip, A New Habitat Plan for Balch Hill. The indoor part of the event will be held at the private home at the end of Hemlock Lane, where forester Ben Hudson will give a brief presentation beginning at 2:30 pm. Then we’ll walk up the Fire Trail and meet at the summit for the field trip that starts at 3:15pm. Those joining the outdoor trip only should park at the Grasse/Trescott Road intersection and hike to the summit. Thanks to Dr. Baker for opening his home for this event.
Rinker-Steele Walk
A small group met at the Area 5 pavilion today to walk through the Rinker-Steele tract. This area is made up of two parcels, the Steele tract, acquired by the town of Hanover in 2010, and the Rinker tract, which was acquired in the 70’s. These two areas are between the Storrs Pond Recreation Area, Oak Hill and Dartmouth’s Organic Farm, and all together they make up a great set of resources and trails for the community. [Read more…]
Autumn Comes to King Bird Sanctuary
Fall colors have come on strongly at the Nan & Allen King Bird Sanctuary at Hayes Farm Park in Etna! Visit the new wildlife plantings to see the vibrant fall foliage of highbush blueberries, the curious yellow flowers of witch hazel, and the broadening view over the Mink Brook Valley from the stone memorial bench. The farm crabapples are especially splendid in fruit. More
