In 1999, Bob led the Council’s effort to protect the 112-acre Mink Brook Nature Preserve, then slated to become a 32-lot subdivision. In 2019, the 20th anniversary of that daunting and ultimately successful project, the Conservancy dedicated the Norman Overlook to Bob and his vision for our community.
Work continues at Pine Park
Pine Park is Hanover’s first natural area permanently preserved as a park and today functions as the town’s “central park” for the enjoyment of walkers, joggers, skiers and many others. The park is owned by the Pine Park Association, a voluntary nonprofit that dates back to 1900, when a group of 17 local residents sought to prevent the Diamond Match Company from harvesting trees along the riverbank just north of the Ledyard Bridge.

CHaD HERO Hike this Sunday
Hikers and hunters, please note that the woods will be busier than normal this Sunday, October 14th.
Both the 5- and 7-mile hiking routes for the Children’s Hospital at Dartmouth (CHaD) HERO event wind their way through the Mink Brook Nature Preserve. Volunteers will be directing HERO hikers at major junctions from approximately 10-2.
Weekend hike inspiration
Looking for something to do on this beautiful long weekend? Check out one of our Hikes of the Month, which include detailed directions and history on each location.
When you’re out there, take a moment to appreciate the incredible array of natural resources in the Upper Valley! These pristine streams and rich soils were cared for by indigenous peoples, enabled farming and forestry to thrive, and now support recreation, tourism and much, much more.
Send us your foliage photos from around the UV and help inspire others to get outdoors & explore!
Watch for blowdowns
The windstorm of Oct. 29-30 visited our trails and it will take time to clear all the paths. Our volunteers made much progress at Balch Hill on 10/31 and at Lower Slade Brook on 11/4. Please get in touch to report other obstructions. New volunteers always welcome!
Fall colors include blaze orange!
Hunting season in NH begins Sept 15, so make sure hikers, kids & dogs are visible in the woods. Bright orange vests are available to borrow at Balch Hill (Grasse Rd kiosk) and at the Trescott lands (Trescott Rd kiosk). Read more about our deer management on Balch Hill here…
